Privacy is in WhatsApp’s DNA. We will never stop creating new ways to protect your personal conversations. We believe that messages and calls should always be safe and private, just like face-to-face conversations. As if two people were talking with no one around.
WhatsApp secures users’ personal calls and messages with standard end-to-end encryption, so no one other than the recipient can read or hear them. But that’s just an important part of how we protect your privacy.
Over the years, we’ve added new layers of privacy to provide a variety of ways to protect your messages, including temporary messages (which erase themselves), end-to-end encrypted backups (which keep your chat history), two-step verification (for even more security) and the ability to block unwanted conversations.
Today we introduce several new privacy features that bring even more protection, giving you more control over your messages. This is all part of our work to keep your WhatsApp conversations safe.

- Quietly Leave Groups: We love our group chats, but some don’t last forever. Now, you can leave a group without it attracting attention from other people. Instead of notifying the entire group when someone leaves, only the admins will know. This option will start rolling out to all users this month.
- Choose who can see you’re online: Seeing when friends or family are online makes us feel even more connected to each other. But everyone has that moment when they want to see WhatsApp undisturbed. For these moments, we brought the possibility to select who can and cannot see when you are online. This option will start rolling out to all users this month.
- Screenshot lock for single view messages: Single view is already an amazing way to share photos or media that don’t need to have a permanent digital record. We now allow blocking of screenshots of single-view messages, providing even more protection. This feature is still in testing, but will be implemented soon.
To further promote these layers of protection, we will launch a campaign to inform users about these features and our commitment to protecting their privacy on WhatsApp. We hope you enjoy these new features and enjoy the many options that help keep your messages even more secure. Submit your feedback to help us create even more functionality.
